I paid £10.99 for a new copy. The one I received was second hand, with a scuffed cover and pages inside turned down by previous readers.

An excellent new book on the Boxer Uprising for anyone new to the subject. Written in a fast pacy style (not what you might expect from an academic!) it rattles along, telling the fascinating tale of this tragic instance of Western Imperialism. Some new insights bring the story right up to date. I have read a great deal on the subject, probably all the books in English, and many in other languages too, and I'd have no hesitation in recommending it as the best book for someone wanting to find out what happened - and gain an understanding of why the Chinese hate us. When you've read this you will realize they have every reason to!

A fascinating and eminently readable account of a war, easily overlooked or dismissed in the West. And never forgotten in the Chinese psyche but which continues to resonate to this day.Good in every aspect, bar the lack of maps.

It could have benefited from more military details. Maps of the campaign would have greatly helped.

Good book if you knew nothing about the Boxer uprising
